Kyle Krch, a real estate entrepreneur, is the founder and CEO of Reno, NV-based Krch Realty. Outside of managing his real estate venture, Kyle Krch’s interests include playing softball.
While they both appear to be very similar sports, softball differs a lot from its more popular counterpart, baseball. Softball was first an indoor sport before it became an outdoor sport played by adults (mostly women) and children.
One of the most obvious differences in the two sports is the field dimensions-with baseball being larger to accommodate the ball’s ability to move faster. The softball field is smaller than the baseball field with the distance between the bases in softball being 60 feet and the distances between bases in baseball being 90 feet. Moreover, the dimensions of the outfield fence is a shorter distance (approximately 220 feet away) in softball than in baseball (approximately 400 feet away).
Pitching is also very different. The area where the softball is pitched is called the Pitcher’s Circle and is on level ground 43 feet from home plate whereas the Pitcher’s Mound is slightly elevated and is 60 feet and six inches of home plate.
The way the ball is pitched is also different. Softball players use an underhanded pitch to throw the ball while baseball players either sidearm or overhand pitch.
The equipment used to play also differs from sports. For one, the bats differ in size with softball bats having a barrel of two and a quarter inches and baseball bats being two and five-eighths inches wide. Baseball bats are also longer and heavier than softball bats.
Finally, the ball size also differs from softballs (outside of fast-pitch) typically being larger than baseballs. Softballs are usually 12 inches and are comprised of yellow, soft fabric while baseballs are nine inches white with red stitching.
